Interview | Manchester Band Blanketman Answer 10 Questions

Just days after releasing their Double A-Side Single, Blanketman took on the 10 Questions. The results below.

Where did your band name come from?

Adam: The idea for the name came about when Dan was reading about the ‘Blanket Protest’, when during The Troubles; political prisoners led by Kieran Nugent refused to wear prison uniform, instead wrapping themselves in blankets, gaining the nickname ‘blanket men’. It took us ages to think of a name and when Dan suggested it Ellie and I liked it immediately.

It sounds good and looks good written down, there’s something a bit off-kilter about it that you can’t quite put your finger on. I don’t think you can picture what kind of music we play from the name and we like that. Jeremy initially hated the name because in French blanquette means something to do with meat, so whenever he heard the name he heard something like ‘Meatman’. He eventually came around though and now he loves it. Meatman was a close second.

What made you want to get into music?

Adam: Probably a mixture of music-loving parents, going to gigs and festivals and that growing up was the main reason for most the band. That and seeing The Proclaimers play at Bridlington Spa with my mum, auntie and grandma when I was about 13. My first taste of true rock and roll and I’ve not seen rock and roll the likes of that since.

Best venue you’ve ever played and why?

The best venue we’ve played so far is Night People in Manchester, really like the feel of the place and the sound on stage was probably the best we’ve experienced, which makes a huge difference, it’s a good size not too big, which we like. We were also supporting Brix & The Extricated which was class. Their fans all turned up to see us and we got a strong reaction.

One band/artist you’d love to support?

Dan: The Country Teasers (if they ever reform)

Ellie: The Brian Jonestown Massacre

Jeremy: Courtney Barnett

Adam: Nick Cave

What’s the greatest love song ever written?

Jeremy: Lovesong- The Cure

Ellie: Pale Blue Eyes- The Velvet Underground

Adam: Something- The Beatles

Dan: Very Friendly- Throbbing Gristle

The best album that you’ve heard this year?

Adam: BODEGA- Endless Scroll

Dan & Ellie- Insecure men- Insecure Men

Jeremy- Kurt Vile- Bottle It In

Most underrated band/artist of all time?

Blanketman: The Monks- 1960’s anti-Beatles.

What was the last song you streamed on Spotify?

Jeremey: Escape Velocity- The Chemical Brothers

Dan: I don’t have Spotify.

Ellie: Gone Daddy Gone- Violent Femmes

Adam: Touch Sensitive: The Fall

Which three artists/bands should we be looking out for? (Musically, not for Criminal Offences)

Snapped Ankles, Jockstrap and BODEGA

What do you want to accomplish next as a band?

Blanketman: I suppose the next step is playing more gigs, hopefully out of Manchester, and getting in front of larger and newer audiences. It would be great to play some festivals next year, so fingers crossed in that regard. We’re going to continue to release new music ourselves; there is possibly an E.P on the cards next year.

There are some bands that we’re looking to collaborate with as well and perhaps put on a couple of shows with in Manchester. Our first year as a band has gone quickly and we’ve achieved more than we thought we would already, so hopefully we can continue to ride the momentum to bigger and better things. Death or glory, all that jazz.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions guys!
