10 Questions for…Bernaccia

As we continue to find bands to hassle and ask silly questions, the band Bernaccia were the unfortunate ones this time around as they share all their thoughts on music with us.

First things first how did you come to be?
There are five of us now, Kieran, Stew, Ellen, Coxy and J. The 4 brothers have been playing together for years and Ellen recently joined to bring melody and contrast in the vocals and rhythm section.

What genre of music would you say you play?

Neo Psych Tribal Desert Blues.

Which bands/artists do you take influences from?

BRMC, Arcade Fire, Tinariwen, GOAT, Dead Can Dance, Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac have all definitely influenced me (J) vocally/lyrically Johnny Cash, Jim Morrison and anything with a hint of dark brooding Americana.

Best venue you’ve ever played and why?

Opening the main stage 02 Academy for Alabama 3. They have such a wide variety of sounds in their set, something I think we share a similarity with. We played a really good set and the crowd was buzzing for us, afterward their was a hugely positive vibe and Alabama 3 raged through their set.
Best gig you have ever attended?

For me it’s A toss up between two. Neil Young at Hyde park last year, where he played a spectacular 14 minute versionBe of ‘Down By The River’. I got separated from all my mates in a rush to the toilet and on the way back he started playing ‘Heart Of Gold’ everybody around me stopped and it was a moment of great musical connection with the crowd who probably all felt it was as personal as I did. The second was Nick Cave and Warren Ellis (With most of the Bad Seeds as well) at Gateshead Sage earlier this year. Lucky enough to have front row seats and the sound was pitch perfect. He came into the crowd and sang with us and especially my brother. We were absolutely wowed and then later in the set he came back and dragged him up on stage with him! He is a huge fan and they both sang the Lyre Of Orpheus. Was such a memorable thing to be involved in.
A band you would most like to support and why?

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. If I had to say one band that has influenced us more than any it’s them. They are my favourite band live and mix there sets full of raw energy and them stripped back melancholic melody that has been engrained in my musical ethos for years now. 100% them, it’s on my Bucket List.

A band that you would like to work with?

There is a Touareg band called Tinariwen. They have a heritage of brilliant desert blues music from Mali. They are Nomads who were involved in conflict in that area and ‘swapped their guns for guitars’ Their sound is just mystifyingly brilliant. I would also really like to work with Emiliana Torrini ‘Gun’ is such a great track.
Top five albums you’ve ever heard?

Pink Floyd – Dark Side Of The Moon
BRMC- Howl
Arcade Fire – the Suburbs
Goat – World Music
Jimi Hendrix – Electric Ladyland
Biggest accomplishment as a band/solo artist?

We have built up a reputation in the north for opening for touring bands and the Fall gig one is probably one of the recent highlights just due to the respect that Mark E Smith seems to inspire in some musical crowds. That’s not saying he has my love and adoration mind but it’s a memorable string to our bow. Besides that the music we have created in the studio over the past year and a half is something I know we are proud of, 2 EPs in a year isn’t bad going. To give you a short answer Power To The Hills is my musical highlight. It’s dramatically good and it’s the tip of the ice-burg, it’s preparation for the album…

What’s next in the pipeline?

The Album is our focus at the minute. Have about 7 songs written and 4 recorded…

Growl Peace Belief -2016

Bernaccia are one of the best upcoming bands we’ve had on this section, so it’s strongly advised to go and listen to them!
